Cancer Care Reviews

A Cancer Care Review (CCR) is a conversation between you and your health professional at your GP Practice about your cancer experience, treatment and recovery. This is your opportunity to talk about any concerns that you have after your diagnosis of cancer. The conversation should cover all areas of your health and wellbeing, not just the medical aspects – this is known as holistic assessment.

This short video describes the purpose of the CCR.

You will be offered a Cancer Care Review within 12-months of your diagnosis at your GP practice, if you have not yet had this appointment you should contact your surgery to book the appointment. You may find completing this Macmillan Concerns Checklist (*also available in 26 languages) helpful in advance as it may help you to think about any concerns that you have before your appointment and prioritise the top 3 for discussion. You may feel embarrassed about bringing up a particular subject and this checklist provides an opportunity to tick the concerns that you have and pass these to your clinician for discussion.

Patients report a feeling of isolation after their treatment ends and this is where your GP surgery can help signpost you to services in the local area to help your recovery and self-management. Most people will find a CCR helpful and should cover discussion around:

  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
  • Effects/impacts of treatment (Physical/Emotional/Practical/Relationships)
  • Lifestyle and staying healthy
  • Medication and prescription entitlement
  • Signposting for self-management and recovery
