Many of our BHG practices will be inviting patients with coughs, colds, and flu-like symptoms to take a nose and throat swab. The aim of the swabs is to discover what viruses are circulating in your area and in turn reduce antibiotic use and assess the effectiveness of flu and COVID vaccinations. The results are anonymized and contribute to a national database to help researchers contribute to public health decisions. On an individual level, knowing if you have a virus can help understand your condition and understand why you might not be given antibiotics. If you’re offered a swab or self-swab, please do take it—your involvement helps shape future health and care provision. To learn more, visit: https://orchid.phc.ox.ac.uk/surveillance
